There’s a certain shimmer that instantly transports you to another era. Soft, radiant, and just a little bit mysterious—moonglow lucite is one of those vintage materials that seems to hum with history.

Originally popularized in the 1950s and 1960s, moonglow lucite captured the spirit of mid-century optimism. The postwar era was all about innovation, color, and futuristic materials, and lucite—especially in its moonglow finish—was the perfect match. Imagine the glow of the moon, bottled up and blended with vibrant color: that’s moonglow.

What Is Moonglow Lucite?

Moonglow is a type of lucite (a brand name for acrylic plastic developed in the 1930s)

that has a soft, radiant sheen. It appears to “glow from within” thanks to how light diffuses through the translucent surface. Think satin glass meets neon dreamscape.

It was often used in costume jewelry but found its way into everything from buttons to drawer pulls, combs, pen handles, and even eyeglass frames. Its soft glow and bold colors made it feel both futuristic and feminine—a hallmark of mid-century design.

Why We’re Obsessed

Moonglow Sylvie Necklace by Leetie Lovendale

At Leetie Lovendale, we’re lucky enough to have inherited and discovered one of the largest known collections of vintage moonglow beads and jewelry parts—authentic leftovers from the 1950s and 60s. Some are rare colors we’ll likely never see again. Others are experimental shapes and finishes that feel like one-off samples from a lost design lab.

We’ve hoarded it (lovingly), archived it (meticulously), and now recreate wearable treasures from these glowing vintage bits. Whether they become adjustable Station Necklaces, lightweight hoop earrings, chunky cocktail rings, or minimalist layering pieces, they always retain that unmistakable glow.

A Mid-Mod Collector’s Dream

If you’re drawn to the aesthetic of Mad Men-era fashion, retro cocktail parties, atomic-age design, or simply love rare materials with a story, moonglow lucite is for you. It’s a

collector’s dream—harder to find with every passing year, and nearly impossible to replicate. (Trust us, we’ve tried.)

Each Leetie piece made with moonglow is a little slice of history—reimagined for modern-day wearers who love bold color, sustainable design, and a bit of shimmer.
