What Is Moonglow Lucite?
Moonglow is a type of lucite (a brand name for acrylic plastic developed in the 1930s)
that has a soft, radiant sheen. It appears to “glow from within” thanks to how light diffuses through the translucent surface. Think satin glass meets neon dreamscape.
It was often used in costume jewelry but found its way into everything from buttons to drawer pulls, combs, pen handles, and even eyeglass frames. Its soft glow and bold colors made it feel both futuristic and feminine—a hallmark of mid-century design.
Why We’re Obsessed
At Leetie Lovendale, we’re lucky enough to have inherited and discovered one of the largest known collections of vintage moonglow beads and jewelry parts—authentic leftovers from the 1950s and 60s. Some are rare colors we’ll likely never see again. Others are experimental shapes and finishes that feel like one-off samples from a lost design lab.
